Movie Review: Friends With Benefits (M18, 109min) | Rating: 4/5*

Image
They'll show you a good time LET'S be honest here. Even if you did unsuccessfully try to go all No Strings Attached with Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher, you know you're not saying no to being Friends With Benefits with hot stuff Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake. Hollywood knows this, which is why it has no problem delivering the same story of two yuppie friends embarking on a sexual relationship free of commitment before succumbing to deeper emotions - twice in the same year. The big difference is, this time around, there's actually that all important lightning-in-the-bottle: Chemistry between the leads. Kunis is the emotionally damaged but feisty New Yorker who headhunts the emotionally unavailable but goofily charming Los Angeleno Timberlake, and ends up being "friends with benefits" after the requisite musical montage. The pair glow in each other's presence, constantly igniting the other's performance, whether it is being comfortably naked in be...

Is Vanessa Hudgens Obsessed Natalie Portman?!

Image
Vanessa Hudgens may be a bit obsessed. Not with a man, or with an unhealthy substance but with a movie! Is it normal? The former High School Musical Star has been rocking a hippy inspired style, complete with flowing frocks and flowery prints. She's even taken to riding a bike -- with a basket in the front! -- out in public, opting for a more eco-friendly mode of transportation. However, though all of her habits seem healthy and stylish, it seems like Vanessa has a obsession. Luckily, it's not an unhealthy one. Vanessa Hudgens admitted in a recent blog post that she is kind of obsessed with the movie Black Swan , starring Natalie Portman. "Black Swan I will always love. Natalie Portman is such a talented actress and I love the art house factor in the film. I watch it over and over," Vanessa said. Do you think the starlet is watching the movie over and over because that is the type of buzz worthy role that she would like to have one day?

Portman's a dream date for Goss

Image
Natalie Portman would be Luke Goss' dream leading lady, the actor has revealed. Having starred alongside Selma Blair and Michelle Yeoh, the Blood Out star now hopes to work with the Black Swan Oscar winner. "My dream co-star would be Natalie Portman, just because I love her acting. She is very believable," the actor said. "There are many great actresses out there that are about honesty and not vanity. So it's just a case of who is the right person for the job - as long as she is a brunette." The 43-year-old would also like the opportunity to collaborate with his Blood Out co-star Curtis '50 Cent' Jackson again. "I was really impressed with Curtis. I would love to work with him again. He's fairly new to film, but he's cool," he said. Luke - who has made his name in action movies like Blade II, Death Race 2 and Tekken - would like to show his romantic side more. "I did One Night With The King in India. It was truly an out-and-out...

Raising the barre: Another side to the world of 'Black Swan'

Image
Russia’s leading ballet dancer shows Chrissie Russell another side to the world of ‘Black Swan’ Ballet dancer Lyudmila Titova is unimpressed by Natalie Portman's award-winning efforts. “I saw this movie but, with great respect to the director and the talent and beauty of Natalie Portman, I have never in my experience seen these kind of ballet dancers.” It's the sort of dismissive putdown only a Russian can pull off, but when Titova reveals the hard grind that's gone into making her one of Russia's finest blossoming talents, it has to be said that the 25-year-old's experience makes ‘Black Swan’ look like child's play. Born in Moscow in 1987, Titova's early interest in dance displayed itself in a more contemporary way than the pirouettes and ronds de jambes of ballet. “I watched a lot of foreign TV for pop music,” she explains. “I was always moving, but my favourite artist was Michael Jackson. One day, when I was five years old, my mum came into the room and f...

Short Cuts film fest to kick off Oct. 20 in Norwalk

Image
JIB Productions, producer of the lunchtime theatre series Play with your Food, will launch the second season of the Short Cuts Film Fest this month. Curated by CT Post film critic Joe Meyers, Short Cuts will be screened in two parts: Thursday, Oct. 20 and Thursday, Nov. 17 at the Garden Cinema in Norwalk. Short Cuts was initiated to showcase the rarely-screened short film genre. "Novelists have always had the freedom to work in the short story form," said Meyers, "but filmmakers rarely get the chance to make anything other than feature-length movies. Short Cuts will explore the short films of directors who have won great acclaim with their standard length movies. In each case, we get to see how these talented artists rise to the challenge of being much more concise than they are in their more famous films." On Oct. 20, three films will be screened beginning at 7:30 p.m. In between making "Melvin and Howard" and "The Silence of the Lambs," Oscar-w...

Natalie Portman: 'Leon: The Professional' Audition (VIDEO)

Image
Yesterday, we saw the first trailer for "My Week With Marilyn," a period piece in which Michelle Williams plays Marilyn Monroe. It's almost certain to win her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress, a category in which she was nominated last year, for "Blue Valentine." She lost, of course, to Natalie Portman and her manic, all-out turn as a psycho ballerina in "Black Swan," but unless there's a sudden critical groundswell for "Thor" or "Your Highness" (criminally underrated!), Williams won't have to compete with Portman this time around. That of course, has little to do with talent; it's just that, this year, Portman spent the first six months pregnant, and now, is taking care of her little baby boy, Aleph. It's quite remarkable how time flies; it feels like just yesterday that Portman was making her big screen debut in "Leon: The Professional." That sent us searching through the archives, and lo and behold, ...
